Zwischen 1942 und 1946 fertigte die Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. in Milwaukee zirka 5500 Stück M4 „M4 High-Speed Tractor“ / M4 HST. Mit einem zulässigen Gesamtgewicht von 18 Tonnen wurde das Fahrzeug als Zugmittel der 90mm Fliegerabwehr-Kanone, der 15,5cm Feldkanone („Long Tom“) und der 15,5cm sowie der 24cm Feldhaubitze verwendet. Dementsprechend gab es unterschiedliche Heckcontainer für den Munitionstransport: Für die 90mm Munition wurde ein Container mit seitlichen Klappen aufgesetzt, für die 15,5cm und 24cm Munition ein Shelter mit Heckklappe. Zur Als Be-/Entladehilfe konnte am Heck ein Kran montiert werden.

Neben anderen europäischen Armeen war der M4 HST auch beim österreichischen Bundesheer in Verwendung und diente hier als Zugmaschine für die 15,5cm Feldkanone („Long Tom“).

With a maximal weight of 18tons it was designated to pull the 90mm AA-gun, the 15,5cm field gun („Long Tom“) and the 15,5cm as well as the 24,0cm field howitzer. Therefore two different types of containers for ammunition carriage have been developed. The one for the 90mm ammo has “pigeon holes” at the side, while the shelter for 15,5 and 24cm ammo has a rear access door. A crane could be fitted at the rear to help lift the projectiles.
